Wednesday, November 9, 2011 12:00 pm – 1:00pm CST Join us as Melissa Harris Perry discusses, with LBW the release of her newest book, Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America: For Colored Girls Who’ve Considered Politics When Being Strong Isn’t Enough. Melissa argues that persistent harmful stereotypes—invisible to many but painfully familiar to black women—profoundly shape black women’s politics, contribute to policies that treat them unfairly, and make it difficult for black women to assert their rights in the political arena. Melissa V. Harris-Perry is professor of political science at Tulane University, where she is founding director of the project on gender, race, and politics in the South. She previously served on the faculty of the University of Chicago and Princeton University. Melissa is a contributor to MSNBC, appearing as a bi-weekly guest on the Thomas Roberts Show and a frequent guest on the Rachel Maddow Show and The Last Word. She is a regular commentator for many print and radio sources in the U.S. and abroad. She lives with her family in New Orleans.
This free program is presented by LBW Leadership Research Institute. |
